NATIONAL, May 09, 2024: The Director General of Health Services at the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has recently issued a directive to all states to strictly enforce a complete ban on the use of electronic cigarettes. This move comes as a response to the growing concern over the health risks posed by these devices, especially among young children.
The Indian government has already prohibited the production, manufacture, import, export, transport, sales, distribution, storage, and advertising for electronic cigarettes and similar devices through the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act of 2019, in order to protect public health.
It is important to note that electronic cigarettes, also known as vapes, simulate tobacco smoking and contain potentially harmful substances such as nicotine, lead, and cancer-causing agents.
In light of this, the Director General of Health Services has urged state governments to take action against the availability and use of electronic cigarettes in educational institutions. This includes implementing measures to educate and raise awareness among students and teachers about the dangers of these products.
Random frisking at school levels to ensure that electronic cigarettes are not used or sold on school premises was also suggested.
