3 tribal villagers killed in BSF firing

Agartala, March 17, 2017: An enraged BSF soldier opened fired on a tribal crowd in south Tripura on Friday and killed three people including a woman. Two men sustained injuries.

Police said the incident occurred at Herbatali under Manu Bazar police station in Sabroom sub division at around 4.30p.m. BSF claimed Constable Rabi Datta of 31 battalion opened fire in self defense after a big crowd of tribal villagers attacked them with sharp cutting weapons.

Villagers however claimed they were protesting rape of a tribal woman by a BSF soldier. Tension was brewing in the area and local BSF post was vacated fearing reprisal by villagers.

Paramilitary TSR deployed in the area to quell tension. Senior BSF and police officers rushed to the incident spot.
