Imphal, August 23, 2017: Prime Minister Narendra Modi led nation to condole death of former Chief Minister of Manipur and northeast's oldest politician Rishang Keishing. Keishing despite being a Naga rose to the position in Meiti dominated Manipur.

He was 97.

“The demise of Rishang Keishing leaves a great void in the politics of the Northeast, a region he served with great diligence”, Modi said in his condolence message.

He added: “My thoughts are with the family and well-wishers of Rishang Keishing in this sad hour”, he added.

Rishang Keishing was among the youngest MPs to get elected to India’s first Lok Sabha in 1952. Only recently in 2014, he retired as a member of the Rajya Sabha when he was 94.

He is survived by his spouse, Khatingla and six children. The youngest is a politician like him and is currently a MLA, representing Phungyar constituency of Ukhrul district, the same constituency Rishang had represented as the chief minister.
