Agartala, September 12, 2017: For first time in 18 years SFI failed to sweep students council elections in government and government aided colleges in Tripura. Though students wing of CPI(M) won councils in all 22 colleges, ABVP was successful to clearly make a dent.

Prevailing tension over college election across the state lashed out in premises of MBB College and BBM College in Agartala. Two senior police officers and scores of students were injured in stone pelting and clashes.

ABVP which for first time appeared in students’ council election in Tripura managed to win 8 percent seats in 13 colleges which went to poll on Tuesday. The RSS front narrowly missed council at Kanchanpur College in north Tripura by two seats.

SFI got 13 seats and ABVP 11 in Kanchanpur College to give a sense on fast changing political situation in rural and interior areas of state ahead of February 2018 assembly elections. ABVP however was powered by getting most of NSUI and Trinamool Chatra Parishad into its fold with many opposition leaders siding with BJP eyeing on assembly election.

SFI and its partner TSU (Tribal Students Union) earlier won 9 of 22 colleges unopposed. Election in rest 13 colleges was held.

Meanwhile authorities augmented security in Agartala fearing the college violence might snowball into a political tension between CPI(M) and BJP. Security also tightened in Kanchanpur, Kailashahar and Dharmanagar where ABVP comparatively performed well.
