BJP team of MPs to visit Tripura

Agartala, October 3, 2017: Central leadership of BJP would send a parliamentary team to Tripura to assess security situation in wake of recent murder of a young television journalist and prevailing tension in some interior areas. State chief of the party Biplab Kumar Deb said the team was expected this week.

He said central leadership agreed to their proposal to nominate a team of parliamentarians to take stock of situation in Tripura “After visit the team would submit its report to Home Minister Rajnath Singh ji”, Deb told newsmen.

He held the state government responsible for current unrest in the state which left a journalist killed, a civilian driver kidnapped and scores of people injured in sporadic clashes. He alleged ruling party cadres flouted the prohibitory order under Section 144 had imposed in sensitive areas inviting tension and subsequent clashes.

Journalist Santanu Bhowmik was murdered at Mandwai, 24km east of Agartala and Jiban Debnath, driver of a private vehicle, was kidnapped by an angry mob in Khumulwng as tension escalated on September 20. Police said the driver remained untraced despite vigorous search and they were not even sure whether they could rescue him safe.

“None from government visited destitute family of Jiban Debnath in past 13 days. We will support the family as its sole bread earner is lost”, Biplab Deb who led party leaders in house of Debnath announced.

Meanwhile places like Mandwai, Khumulwng and Jampuijala remained cutoff as security forces imposed restrictions on movements. No outsiders are allowed to cross check posts citing intensified security measure.
