Internet services restored in Tripura

Agartala, October 5, 2017: Internet and cellular services which were suspended second time in a month on Wednesday after fresh violence rocked Khumulwng, headquarters of TTAADC, restored on Thursday evening. The measure preceded arrest of Balendra Debbarma one of accused persons wanted in connection with disappearance of driver of a private vehicle which was attacked on September 20 the day young television journalist Santanu Bhowmik was murdered at Mandwai, 24km east of here. 

Though whereabouts of Jiban Debnath was yet not known, police believed he was killed on the same day and his body was dumped in forests. Soon after arrest, a large crowd mostly women, gathered outside local Radhapur police station and started agitation to press demand for release of Balendra Debbarma.

Within an hour the protestors went on rampage forcing troops to lob tear gas shells, resort to baton charge and blank fire. Some protestors were injured.

After protestors dispersed Balendra was shifted to another police station to contain situation. He was sent to police remand for five days for questioning after produced in a court.

Fearing escalation of violence, state government suspended internet and cellular services from 6.20pm on Wednesday for 24 hours. Situation in Khumulwng is under control, police said.
