President Patil says poverty eradication most important

Agartala, September 24, 2010: President Pratibha Devisingh Patil underscored need to attach attention for welfare of the people in which poverty eradication should be a primary goal. She added poverty eradication is linked with giving people income earning and employment opportunities.  

President was speaking at the civic reception arranged by the Agartala Municipal Council Friday afternoon after arriving from Aizawl on a two day visit to Tripura. She was delayed in arriving due to bad weather condition at Aizawl.  

President accompanied by her husband was felicitated by Governor Dr. D. Y. Patil, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and Municipal Council Chairperson Shankar Das at the civic reception in the Town Hall in premises of huge Ujjyanta Palace, the abode of erstwhile royals.  

Patil suggested that development of infrastructure in the country in which transport facility is an important component. “For the northeastern this more important”, she opined adding that efforts in the region must continue as increase connectivity will facilitate two way movement of people and goods within the region and outside.  

Highlighting various prospects, resources and infrastructure available in Tripura, President Patil said there are opportunities for setting up medium and large scale industries based on natural gas and can grow in the service sectors like tourism and hotel industry to take advantage of green lush and eco-friendly environment.  

“In addition export and import business has considerable potential. Agartala can look at becoming a business hub for the region and it's important for it to become a model city”, she said.

President would attend the convocation of the Tripura Central University Saturday. Extensive security arrangements are in place in Agartala and around.
