NE states reservoir of traditional knowledge, President

Agartala, September 25, 2010: President Pratibha Devisingh Patil during her speech at the 8th Convocation of Tripura University today said the northeastern states are known for their reservoirs of traditional knowledge in many areas. She urged to document and conserves it.  

She also said, the universities across the region can think of new manufacturing methods, product design and product development to help artisans. Tourism also has good potential in this region which can be harnessed for economic development and for employment generation, Patil added. She suggested that the universities can introduce special programmes to build capabilities for developing sustainable tourism.   

President Patil stated that from early days there has been a desire for pursuit of higher education in the state of Tripura as the erstwhile Maharaja of Tripura Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur established the first degree college here in the year 1947 and later the state government established Tripura University in 1987 for meeting growing needs.  

Sixty five students had been conferred awards and medals at the occasion. Smt. Patil later inaugurated the Management Building and IT Building at the university campus.   

Governor of Tripura Dr. DY Patil and Chief Minister of Tripura Manik Sarkar, Prof. Sukhdeo Thorat, Chairman of University Grants Commission, Prof. Amiya Kumar Bagchi, Chancellor, Tripura University, Vice Chancellor of Tripura University and other dignitaries graced the convocation function.
