City bus service is now a reality

Agartala, October 8, 2010: Just five days before the biggest festival of Tripura, Durga puja, the Agartalites got their gift as City Bus service started plying in its capital from today. Braving rain a huge gathering was seen in the function at Radhanagar Bus Stand where Chief Minister Manik Sarkar inaugurated the service this morning.  

This service is introduced under Jawarlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. Initially thirty eight busses will ply in seven different routes and later on thirty seven more busses will be introduced. Of the total 75 buses 10 will be AC busses. Tripura Transport Minister Manik Dey in his speech stressed on the need of setting more CNG filling station.  

The fares to be changed for availing city bus service will be in accordance with the official rate for such service, Mr. Dey added. Managing Director of Tripura Urban Transport Company, Krishna Dulal Chowdhury and Chairperson of Agartala Municipal Corporation, Sankar Das were among others present on the occasion. While addressing the gathering Manik Sarkar expressed the hope that introduction of city busses will not herald in unhealthy competition between bus and auto Riksha operators and emphasized on the quality of bus service for city dwellers.
