Bangladesh FM arrives in Tripura

Agartala, November 10, 2010: Bangladesh foreign affairs minister Dr Dipu Moni was accorded a rousing welcome at the Akhaura border Wednesday as she kicked off two day official visit to Tripura with an intention to strengthen bilateral tie in all spheres with northeast India. Senior Tripura government ministers Badal Choudhury and Jiten Choudhury, senior civil and security officials received the minister and her artist husband Advocate Taufiq Nawaz anda accompnaying delegates arrived aroud 11AM.  

Indian high commissioner of Bangladesh to India Tariq A Karim, High Commisioner of Bangladesh to India Rajeet Mitter and a host diplomats of both coutnreios were present.  

However security concern is preventing Dr Dipu Moni from going to Sabroom, 135km south of Agartala, where she was scheduled to attend few programmes including a ceremony marking laying of foundation stone for an integrated export import centre on the border. The cancellation of visit of the foreign minister was taken in view of arrest of a Bangladeshi suspect at Sabroom last week.  

Dr Moni would be joined a conference on “North East India and Bangladesh: Strengthening Ties” at Pragna Bhawan in Agartala in afternoon. Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) with support of some ministries of the union government has organised the programme amidst a steady rise in trade with Bangladesh especially in aftermath of signing of infrastructure related agreements between the two countries.  

Other engagements of the first ever top government leader from Bangladesh in Tripura are to attend a public reception to be accorded by Agartala municipal council and the reception of Governor D. Y. Patel. A meeting with Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, a few ministerial colleagues and senior bureaucrats are also on the card.  

On Thursday morning Dr Moni, Chief Minister and dignitaries would fly in a chopper to Chottakhola in Belonia subdivision, near Sabroom to attend foundation stone lying ceremony of a memorial in reminiscence of martyrs in war of liberation of Bangladesh. The area was used by Bangladesh freedom fighters as their operational headquarters in resistance and fight against Pakistan army.
