Northeast kid dancing high in Orissa

Meet Sulagna Bhattacharya. This tiny tot, who incidentally has parental roots in Northeast, is galloping high in the dancing circuit of the culturally vibrant costal state of Orissa, that too at the tender age of eleven. Now residing at historical city of Cuttack in Orissa, Sulagna is not only a profound Oddissi dancer but she equally excels in Modern dance, much to the amusement of her mother Shomani Bhattacharya, who hails from Agartala, the capital city of the Northeastern state of Tripura. Shomani herself was an acclaimed dancer at Agartala, until she settled in Cuttack . Shomani has a cherished dream that her daughter would earn fame in dancing, till now Sulagna has not only made her mother proud but entire northeast.

This highly talented dancer started her stage performance when she was only four years old. From her very first performance she started to draw praise. After that there was no looking back for Sulagna. Success was writ large on her every stepping. Now studying at class Seven, Sulagna's schedule remains packed up with stage shows, TV programmes and Commercial advertisement shootings. She performed more than fifty stage shows in different cities in India both in modern and Oddissi style. She came to limelight after winning a dance competition programme Boom Shaka Laka aired by ETV Oriya. Later she became a household name in Orissa when she won the 1 – 2 cha cha cha, a dance competition which set enter Orissa rocking. She went on to win Oye – Oye, another dance event on Doordarshan Oriya channel. She has acted in numerous Oriya album and TV ads.

Back at Agartala people are happy to know that a kid from their city is scaling great heights in Orissa. Sulagna has also performed at Agartala at a tender age, mesmerizing the audience then. Her father Sujit Bhattacharya attributes her success to her Guru Raghunath Dutta, a Presidential award winner. “I gave her the initial lessons and then she went to Gururji, but I feel that in her initial days the emphatic cultural atmosphere that she got in Northeast has played a pivotal role in molding her into a good dancer at a tender age." Sulagna's mother Shomani Bhattacharya opined. Sulagna has already completed 3rd year in Oddissi dance with 1st class distinction. Though she never took her acting seriously, Sulagna made her presence felt in her debut album Kunni Thakuro , directed by famous Oriya director Bobby Islam. That followed by Mitha Mitha Hasso.

Sulagna said, “I just want to perform as I am doing right now and I also want to perform at Agartala and rest of Northeast." As Sulagna prepares to cope up with her busy schedule, she hardly misses to listen to her latest musical craze Zubeen Garg, the musical sensation from Northeast.
