Northeast Models and Designers Make Their Mark

The year 2007 saw models and designers from Northeast region making their mark at different levels in the fashion industry.Esther Jamir, a well known model from Nagaland and Shruti Agrawal, whose mother hails from Sikkim walked the ramp for leading designers during the Wills Lifestyle India fashion week at the National capital.

Esther feels proud to represent her state, and wishes that other models from the region would also make a name in the glamour industry.

"They (girls) should come out and try. They are not trying and once they will try, people will consider their looks as common Indian commercial look. Right now, people differentiate us. But once the northeast girls come up, they will take us as common Indian looking models," Jamir said.

The Sikkimese beauty Shruti Agrawal, said: "It has gone very well, and this fashion week has proved positive for me." Shruti has also featured for the second time in the much-acclaimed Kingfisher Swimsuit special Calendar 2008.

Nordon Wangdi, a fashion designer from Sikkim also showcased his spring/summer collection at the fashion week. It was a flamboyant line that was inspired by the stuffed Rag Doll.

He feels the time has come when the country recognizes the talents of the fashion conscious northeast.

Wangdi said,  "Everybody is coming out in different areas and different spheres of life, and it's a great thing. Be it music or any other field, I want that everybody should go for it. Nothing is impossible."

The number of models and designers from the northeast trying to establish themselves in the fashion industry has increased in the recent times. The latest to hit the ramp at the national level is Akuonuo Khezhie, who contested at the Pantaloons’ Femina Miss India 2007 and walked away gracefully with the subtitle Pantaloons Femina Miss Fresh Face and the sub award Sony My Miss India.

Well, there is no doubt about the fact that North East region is brimming with talents that are only waiting to be tapped. It’s time we step out of our homes and explore the varied opportunities beyond our borders. Given the potentials that we have and shaped with the right perspective, the sky is just the limit.
