A crucial
meeting between Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh
Rifles (BDR) would be held at port city of Chittagong next week
to discuss various contentious issues and movement of the
militants. The meeting convened between 23 and 25 April assumed
significance in light of stringent measures unleashed by the
caretaker government of Bangladesh to improve security situation
that has direct bearing on India’s eastern frontier.
Official
sources on Thursday informed that the meeting is taking place at
deputy director general level between three frontiers in
northeast India and their counterparts in eastern Bangladesh.
BSF Tripura
frontier Inspector General (IG) Jamal Ahmed Khan as well as
Shillong frontier IG P.K. Mishra would represent India. Mishra
is also in-charge of newly created Mizoram, Cachar and Manipur (MCM)
frontier.
Officials said
various topics would be incorporated in the agenda of the
meeting to run for four days. The meeting is significant in view
of current extensive security operation across Bangladesh
against religious and ethnic militants as well as criminals.
Unlike past no quarter in the government and security circle of
Bangladesh under emergency was helping out the Indian militants
and smuggling rackets, reports suggested.
The measures
across the border have actually contributed to India’s interest.
In past three months numerous militants owing allegiance to the
All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) and the National Liberation Front
of Tripura (NLFT) surrendered to different security forces after
fleeing hideouts in Bangladesh.
Besides nine
heavily armed cadres of National Socialist Council of Nagaland
(I-M) surrendered to the BSF officials at Panisagar, north
Tripura, on 25 February last. This followed surrender of six
HNLC (of Meghalaya) including two women surrendering to BSF at
north Tripura district headquarters of Kailashahar on 14 April.
