Setting
a rare instance in court martial history in
India
a soldier of Border Security Force (BSF) has been awarded death
sentence by the force’s internal justice system. The sentence
however is subject to confirmation by the high court.
Head
constable Balbir Singh of 21battalion BSF was charged with
murder of two officers in a market near the border outpost at
Rajnagar in south Tripura on
June 7 2006
. Singh went on berserk after an altercation and snatched self
loading rifle of a constable and opened fire chasing deputy
commandant Kameswar Singh and assistant commandant Alok Ranjan.
Both
the officers died at the scene forcing panic stricken people of
the area run for safety. Later
additional reinforcement reached the spot and disarmed Balbir.
BSF lodged a FIR with local police station and police filed the
charge sheet in court of SDJM, Belonia, south Tripura.
The
court allowed transfer of the case for trial at by BSF’s
general security force court at frontier headquarters in
Agartala which concluded complex proceedings on March 2. The
court found Balbir guilty of murder of two officers and awarded
him death sentence.
In
history of the border force Balbir is third accused to be given
capital punishment on charges of murder of members of the force,
