Six wild elephants died of electrocution in Chondon Nokat, about 45 kilometres from Tura in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya. This is a first case in the recent times were six jumbos died.

Indian border security force (BSF) soldiers cover face with net when they patrol remote  Khantlang in India's northeastern Tripura state. A senior BSF official originated the idea to protect the soldiers from mosquito bite as malaria has taken a high toll in the paramilitary force responsible to guard India's border with Bangladesh.

Indian Soldiers of Artillery Regiment accord guard of honour to coffin of disinterred  remains of Bir Shreshtha Sepoy Hamidur Rahman, one of the seven independence war heroes of Bangladesh, at Ambassa in Tripura state. Remains of Hamidur, who was killed in a mission to destroy a Pakistani position in a battleground in 1971, had been buried there for more than 36 years. The coffin was taken to Bangladesh on Monday, December 10, 2007 for a reburial amid full state honour in Dhaka.

19 Bangladeshi children detained in different raids squat at a police station in Agartala, capital city of India's northeastern Tripura state, Monday, December 31, 2007. Police claim the detainees were involved in burglary and theft in the city and neighbourhoods in past weeks. Authorities say the children part of a cross border criminal syndicate would be tried under India's juvenile justice act.

Commoners cheer to see the train engine on its trial run appearing from inside a  two kilometer long tunnel at Atharamura hills, 45km east of Agartala, capital of
northeastern Tripura state. The remote state is set to be connected with India's  massive rail network more than six decades since the country attained independence.
Indian officials say 105 rail staffs and workers died in diseases and attacks by the militants in five past years of hazardous engagement in the hilly state that shares border
with Bangladesh on its three sides.
