CM Zoramthanga submits resignation after MNF’s rout

AIZAWL, December 04 2023: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga tendered his resignation to the Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati Monday at 4 pm at Raj Bhavan here as his party did not secure a majority in state’s assembly election. Counting which was delayed by a day was taken up Monday for all 40 assembly constituencies.
The Governor accepted the resignation of the Chief Minister and his cabinet.
Regional umbrella coalition Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) won 27 seats, almost a two third majority. Hitherto powerful Mizo National Front (MNF) was distanced second and ended with 10 seats while Congress got one.
BJP candidates won two seats in areas dominated by Chakma tribe that emerged as a new vote bank for the saffron party.
Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer Madhup Vyas informed that 4000 personnel were involved in the counting process held in 13 counting centres across the state. Most of the 174 candidates lost their deposits.
