Manipur: Centre extends deadline for enquiry commission

REGIONAL, September 13, 2024: The centre has extended deadline for the Commission of Inquiry to submit a report on the violence in Manipur which has resulted in over 220 deaths so far has been extended until November 20. The commission headed by former Gauhati high court judge Ajai Lamba was established on June 3, 2023 and is tasked with investigating the causes and spread of the violence and riots targeting various communities since May 3, 2023.
The commission is expected to submit its report to the central government within six months of its first sitting. Its scope includes examining the sequence of events leading to the violence identifying any lapses or dereliction of duty by responsible authorities or individuals and evaluating the adequacy of administrative measures taken to prevent and address the violence.
The commission will also investigate any complaints or allegations made by individuals or associations. According to the Union Home Ministry large-scale violence erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, resulting in numerous fatalities and serious injuries.
