NATIONAL: At least five passengers lost their lives when a private sleeper bus caught fire after being struck by a truck in the Chitradurga district of Karnataka before dawn Thursday. The incident occurred on National Highway-48 (NH-48) around 2:30 am while the bus was traveling from Bengaluru to Shivamogga.
Reports indicate that the truck, having jumped the median, collided with the bus possibly hitting its fuel tank and resulting in a fuel leak. Some passengers managed to escape the ensuing blaze.
The bus operated by Seabird Coach had 32 people on board including crews.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims' families and announced a financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh for the deceased's families and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivkumar also conveyed his sympathies and wished for the quick recovery of those injured hoping for a cessation of such tragic events.
A similar incident had occurred in Telangana earlier in November where 20 fatalities were reported following a collision between a passenger bus and a gravel truck.
