Service providers presented initiatives for safeguarding consumer interests

REGIONAL, November 20, 2025: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Regional Office Kolkata, Thursday organised a Capacity Building Workshop for Consumer Organisations (COs) of the Eastern Zone, covering the northeastern states, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal in Shillong.
Manoj Kumar, ADG, DoT NE LSA, presented an overview of the Sanchar Saathi portal (sancharsaathi.gov.in), including key modules such as Chakshu (fraud communication reporting), CEIR (lost and stolen mobile tracking) and TAFCOP (mobile connection count). COs participating in the workshop showcased their activities in conducting Consumer Awareness Programmes (CAPs) over the past year and were encouraged to include topics such as cyber fraud and the usefulness of the Sanchar Saathi portal in future programmes.
Telecom Service Providers also presented their initiatives towards safeguarding consumer interests and reported their performance in conducting Consumer Education Workshops (CEWs). They were advised to ensure compliance with regulatory norms, particularly regarding the inclusion of CO members in their Advisory Committees.
Kaushik Mukherjee, Advisor, TRAI RO Kolkata, highlighted the need for continuous knowledge enhancement of COs through such workshops so that accurate consumer-related information can be disseminated effectively at the grassroots level.
On the evolution of telecom technologies and the critical role of mobile networks and spoke about major Government-sponsored telecom initiatives including BharatNet and the 4G Saturation Project. TRAI’s initiative in organising the workshop in Shillong and emphasised the need for stronger public awareness on issues such as cyber fraud and the Sanchar Saathi portal of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
Representatives from Consumer Organisations, distinguished guests and all major Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) participated in the programme. DC Tikadar, Addl. DG (T), North-East LSA, graced the event as Chief Guest, while PP William, CGM, BSNL NE-I attended as Guest of Honour.
Ravi Gahlawat, Manager, RBI, delivered a special address on financial cyber fraud while the vote of thanks was given by Ashim Dutta, Jt Advisor, TRAI.
