Centre frames a law to address irregularities in competitive exams
With provisions for jail term of 10 years and a fine of Rs 1 crore for offenders

NATIONAL, June 22, 2024: India has enacted a law to combat malpractices and irregularities in competitive examinations, with provisions for a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine of up to 1 crore rupees for offenders. The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Bill, 2024, was passed by Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha this yyear on February 6 and 9, respectively, and approved by President Droupadi Murmu on February 12.
The Act aims to prevent unfair means in public examinations conducted by various bodies, including the Union Public Service Commission, Staff Selection Commission, National Testing Agency (NTA), Railway Recruitment Board and banking recruitment bodies.
Those involved in organised crimes of cheating will face five to 10 years of imprisonment and a minimum fine of 1 crore rupees.
Meanwhile the joint CSIR-UGC-NET examination in June 2024 has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances and logistic issues, officials said Saturday.
