AGARTALA, November 03, 2025: The hearing in the Supreme Court in connection with the Village Committee (VC) elections in Tripura has been adjourned for two weeks owing to an application by the designated advocate of the Tripura Government.
The case was supposed to be taken up Monday, but Advocate Shuvodeep Roy of the respondent approached the Registrar of the apex court for a postponement citing filling of the Reply Affidavit by the government.
The case was listed for hearing in the courtroom of a division bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice Vinod Chandran. It was moved by Pradyot Kishore Manikya, founder of the Tipra Motha party.
“Fighting for justice for the poor Tiprasa people whose democratic rights have been denied by not holding VC elections. It’s been almost 10 years since the last elections were held," he wrote on a micro blogging site.
Pradyot regretted that “Justice is being denied to the Tiprasa people."
The High Court of Tripura had in 2023 directed the Tripura state election commission to hold the VC elections, but lacked sanction from the state government.
Village Committees in areas under the TTAADC are substitute to the Panchayats of non-scheduled (general) areas.
