AGARTALA, July 20, 2025: Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha has announced the launching of a Witness Protection Scheme to ensure the safety and cooperation of witnesses in the justice system. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visionary leadership, three new criminal laws have been enacted with effect from July 1, 2024 - Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).
These laws aim to replace colonial-era punishments with a justice-focused approach, integrating technological advancements in police investigation and court procedures, Chief Minister said in his speech at a Workshop on Investigation and Prosecution under the New Criminal Laws and NDPS Act in Agartala on Sunday.
Dr Saha stated a meeting was held in Guwahati on March 16, 2025, to monitor the preparation and implementation of these new criminal laws across all northeastern states. He added that the new criminal laws represent a significant step towards creating a citizen-centric, more accessible and efficient justice system.
“Both victims and accused must receive all relevant documents, such as the FIR, police report, statements and confessions within 14 days”, he asserted.
The new laws will benefit the people by clearly defining the rights of victims and accused, addressing issues in real time and focusing on evidence collection and identification. The state government is working to improve law and order in the state, and discussions have been held on NDPS cases, such as filing an FIR at any police station and providing free treatment for victims of incidents of outrageous modesty.
