AGARTALA, February 17, 2024: The Padma Shri awardee and world-renowned gymnast, Dipa Karmakar, unfortunately had to settle for fifth place on her favorite event, the vaulting table, at the ongoing World Gymnastics Championships in Cairo, Egypt.
Despite being known as the "Golden Girl," she was forced to withdraw from the final Saturday due to a leg injury. While it may be disappointing, it is no small feat to represent one's country and achieve a top-five position after a long hiatus.
Many are hopeful that this success will pave the way for even better results in the future. Despite doubts from some, Dipa and her Coach remain optimistic, recognising the significance of wearing the country's jersey after a three-year absence and the potential for future success.
In the qualifying round, Dipa Karmakar secured third place with a score of 13.449, earning her a spot in the final. Another Indian gymnast, Pranati Naik, also qualified for the final, finishing in seventh place.
