REGIONAL, April 27, 2024: The Nagaland government issued an order Saturday to the police, instructing them to take lawful action against groups that are harassing the business community in the state. This decision was made in response to the indefinite shutdown called by the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) to protest against the "illegal and rampant taxes" imposed on businesses.
The Cabinet adopted a resolution to convey this decision to the Director General of Police and Commissioner of Nagaland, directing them to inform various Naga political groups that illegal activities such as extortion and kidnapping will not be tolerated and will be dealt with according to the law.
The Cabinet also advised the law enforcement agencies to use the National Security Act (NSA) and other stringent measures to address these issues.
The government has directed the Director General of Police to send additional forces to Dimapur immediately to curb these illegal activities. The indefinite shutter down, which began on Friday and the one-day shutter down called by the DCCIs of Chümoukedima, Niuland, Wokha and Kohima have affected normal life in the districts.
The Cabinet has also decided to provide additional resources to the law enforcement agencies for increased mobility and to operationalize and increase the use of CCTVs.
