REGIONAL: The Tripura Chakma Students Association has called on the central government to intervene into alleged ongoing assaults on Northeast students highlighted by the fatal attack on 24-yar-old Angel Chakma in Dehradun. Following the incident, Tripura's Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha contacted Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, receiving assurances of a thorough investigation.
Meanwhile, TISF, the student wing of the Tipra Motha party, held a candlelight vigil in Agartala Sunday evening demonstrating solidarity and mourning.
Tripura police have been in touch with the Uttarakhand counterparts with reports of five arrests in Dehradun.
The Chakma Students Association expressed deep concern for the safety of Northeast students in different parts of the country, demanding urgent government action against hate crimes and specified punishments for the perpetrators.
They announced a candlelight march in Angel’s memory and intend to submit a memorandum to Dr. Saha, to demand justice and compensation for the family.
Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya condemned the murder and pledged continued efforts for justice for the victim.
