AGARTALA: The Central Government has introduced the "VB GRAM G Act 2025" amending MGNREGA to enhance rural development and transparency. Tripura Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath Thursday hailed this change, expressing gratitude Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The new Act increases the guaranteed mandays for workers from 100 to 125 and allocates more funds than previous administrations. Under the current government from 2015 to 2025, funding for MGNREGA escalated from ₹2 lakh 13,000 crore to ₹7 lakh 80,000 crore with significant allocations to Tripura, Nath said adding that this demonstrated a commitment to rural development.

In the last seven years, over 8 lakh assets have been created through MGNREGA in Tripura, with wage payments benefiting rural households totaling ₹5,332 crore compared to ₹4,240 crore before 2018, Minister said. Currently, Tripura has 6.56 lakh job cards and 10.20 lakh registered workers. The central government funds 90% of MGNREGA costs for North Eastern states.

The Act also emphasises water conservation, asset creation and climate change mitigation, with administrative expenditure limits increased from 6% to 9% for better implementation.

Farmers Welfare Minister said the new system ensures wages are transferred directly to workers' bank accounts, enhancing transparency and timeliness as to eliminate corruption linked to previous administrations. The Minister highlighted a corruption case from the Left Front era, involving a ₹17 crore scam revealed by a CAG report, with ongoing legal proceedings.

Tripura has consistently performed well in MGNREGA implementation, ranked 2nd in 2020–21 and 3rd in the following years.
