The World Bank ranks India as world’s 4th equal country
Most equal societies with a Gini Index of 25.5

NATIONAL, July 05, 2025: The World Bank has ranked India among the world's Most Equal Societies with a Gini Index of 25.5, making it the fourth most equal country after the Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Belarus.
This index measures how income or wealth is distributed among households. India is classified as having "moderately low" inequality, close to entering the "low inequality" category. It outperforms all 167 countries analyzed by the World Bank, except the top three.
India's Gini Index has improved from 28.8 in 2011 to 25.5 in 2022 showing progress in achieving economic growth alongside social equity.
