AGARTALA: A 60-year-old man was seriously injured by a wild elephant while grazing his cow in the Chakmaghat forest area in Khowai district Sunday morning. Dhananjay Biswas was admitted at the government hospital in Teliamura.
His son said the wild elephant grabbed him with its trunk and threw him on the ground. He was rescued by some villagers who shouted to scare the elephant away.
Certain villages adjoining forests in Khowai have been troubled by wild elephants that frequently raid villages, leading to crop destruction and houses. Some deaths have occurred in the area over the past few years.
There has not been any sustainable measure on the part of the forest department to mitigate the problem. The much-talked elephant corridor is yet to be established.
