AGARTALA: Following a Supreme Court ruling, the Animal Resources Development Department of Tripura has endeavoured to establish animal birth control centers and shelters for stray dogs and other stray animals. Department's Secretary Deepa D Nair Tuesday announced this directive at a press conference referencing the Supreme Court's verdict delivered on November 8, 2025, that requires the implementation of these centers nationwide.
Each locality is required to form a task force comprising representatives from municipal corporations, municipalities, nagar panchayats and general administration along with a helpline to assist the public. Trained personnel for catching stray dogs and animals will be included in these committees.
The directive stipulates that stray dogs and animals must be removed from sensitive areas such as hospitals, schools, bus stands and railway stations to enhance public safety. The procedure begins with capturing the stray dogs and transporting them to the Animal Birth Control Centers for sterilisation and vaccination before relocating them to animal shelters.
The Animal Resources Development Department aims to ensure public safety while promoting the welfare of stray animals through the execution of these measures.
