Union Home Minister assures people of Kerala of necessary assistance

NATIONAL, July 31, 2024: The Kerala government Wednesday reported that the Wayanad region has been severely affected by a landslide resulting in over 200 deaths and 191 missing. Efforts by relief and rescue workers to extract bodies from the debris are ongoing while the injured have been taken to the hospital.

The Army's efforts to construct a Bailey bridge at Chooralmala were initially hindered by heavy rains and swift currents, but work resumed once the rains subsided. This bridge is crucial for transporting heavy machinery to Mundakkai, the area that was hit by the landslide.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured the people of Kerala that the Government of India will provide all necessary assistance and spare no effort in the rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts following this tragedy.

He also mentioned that India is one of only four to five countries that can forecast an early warning for a calamity up to seven days in advance. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier issued an orange alert for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts in Kerala indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall.
