Authorities enforced Section 163 of BNSS in a village, warned of Section 223

IH News Desk

REGIONAL, April 24, 2025: The authorities have recently implemented a ban on fishing activities in water bodies located in Meghalaya. The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills District has issued an Order under Section 163 BNSS, prohibiting the illegal killing of fish and environmental degradation in the Rynsha, Lawmei River, which runs through the Lawmei village.

This ban specifically targets the use of harmful chemicals and explosive substances, such as bleaching powder, ammonium-sulphate, pesticides and dynamite, by any individual. This Order has been put in place due to reports of widespread fish killings in the Wah Rynsha, Lawmei River, Lawmei village and surrounding areas caused by the reckless use of these dangerous substances and fishing nets.

These actions have the potential to cause irreversible damage to the river and put the aquatic life at risk. Any violation of this Order will result in prosecution under Section 223 of the BNS. This ban is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice.
